Program Overview
The Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) in Curriculum and Instruction: Reading degree program is a 30 credit hour program intended to prepare educators who work in the P-12 setting as change agents who engage actively in their communities, using appropriate pedagogy and technology to foster the development of global citizens. Students enrolled in this program will complete a four course sequence in reading designed to strengthen educators’ knowledge and skills in this specific area of focus. This program does not lead to certification or credential endorsement.

Admission Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in education or an aligned field from a regionally accredited institution, a nationally accredited institution approved and documented by the faculty and dean of the College of Education, or an appropriately certified foreign institution;
- A 2.7 grade point average for the bachelor’s degree used as the basis of admission, or a grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) for the last 60 hours of coursework (including graduate work)
- A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy .”
- An initial teaching certificate and/or current experience working in the P-12 setting with students
- A criminal background check or fingerprint check

- Submission of evidence of current criminal background check or fingerprint check (typically a copy of a teaching certificate/license)
An admissions representative is available to help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:
- Completed Application for Admission Form
- Application fee (Non-refundable, except in California and Arizona. In the state of Arizona, the application fee is refundable if the application is canceled within three business days of the applicant signing the Enrollment Agreement.)
- If the basis of admission is an earned bachelor’s degree with a 2.7 grade point average, an official transcript from the degree granting institution
- If the basis of admission is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) for the last 60 hours of coursework, official transcripts from all postsecondary schools attended during the 60 hours of study
Exceptions the Minimum Grade Point Average
Applicants with a grade point average between 2.5 and 2.7 may be considered for admission on an exception basis. Exceptions must be approved by the program chair. Exceptions must be documented, signed, placed, and retained in the student’s academic file. Students admitted on an exception basis will be assigned provisional status. See “Exceptions to Admission Requirements” in section 5 of this catalog under “Admission Policies .”
Applicants with a grade point average between 2.0 and 2.4 may be considered for admission on an exception basis with significant evidence of academic and professional potential. This potential may be demonstrated by the career and/or personal accomplishments indicated in the statement of academic and professional goals, the career summary, and academic or professional letters of recommendation. Exceptions must be approved by the program chair. Exceptions must be justified, documented, signed, placed, and retained in the student’s academic file. Students admitted on an exception basis will be assigned provisional status. See “Exceptions to Admission Requirements” in section 5 of this catalog under “Admission Policies .”
Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement will also be required to submit the following:
- Personal/professional goal statement with a self-appraisal of qualifications for the profession
- Current résumé (or career summary)
- The names and contact information of three professional and/or academic references
Graduation Requirements
Students are eligible for graduation from the MAEd in Curriculum and Instruction: Reading degree program when the following requirements are met:
- Satisfactory completion of 30 credit hours in the program of study that includes
- 18 credit hours of Core course requirements
- 12 credit hours of Reading specific course requirements
- A grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a scale of 4.0) and a grade of B- or better in all required courses
- A completed Petition to Graduate submitted to campus administration
Program Requirements
Students enrolled in the MAEd in Curriculum and Instruction: Reading degree program are required to complete 30 credit hours distributed as follows: Core course requirements, 18 credit hours; Reading specific requirements, 12 credit hours.
