Program Overview
The Education Specialist (EdS) in Higher and Postsecondary degree program is designed for students desiring to enhance professional competence as educational leaders, instructors, or consultants in academic affairs, student affairs, or student services divisions within community colleges, technical schools and institutes, four-year colleges and universities as well as government, military, religious, profit or nonprofit postsecondary educational organizations and divisions. The EdS in Higher and Postsecondary degree program offers three concentrations: Student Affairs and Services, Teaching and Learning, and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Argosy University, Atlanta Students
The programs offered through Argosy University, Atlanta College of Education DO NOT lead to teacher or administrator certification, licensure, or endorsement in any State in the United States. Further, due to recent rule changes by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC), students must meet program completion deadlines and rules issued by the PSC in order to be eligible for possible certification upgrade.
Argosy University, Denver Students
The programs offered through Argosy University, Denver College of Education DO NOT lead to teacher or administrator certification, licensure, or endorsement in any State in the United States.
Argosy University, Nashville Students
The programs offered through Argosy University, Nashville College of Education DO NOT lead to teacher or administrator certification, licensure, or endorsement in any State in the United States.
Argosy University, Seattle Students
This program is not intended to lead to teacher certification. Teachers are advised to contact their individual school districts as to whether this program may qualify for salary advancement.
Program Learning Outcomes
The EdS in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program is designed around four key learning areas.
Program Outcome One: Advance Social Justice and Transformative Practice
1.a Foster democratic and empowering environments that promote understanding and respect for diversity
1.b Cultivate the active engagement of diverse communities in social justice initiatives that enhance student development and learning
1.c Demonstrate critical reflection that strengthens or improves themselves, their institutions, and their professional community
Program Outcome Two: Design, implement, manage, and assess learning opportunities sensitive to stakeholder characteristics and collegiate and community environments
Program Outcome Three: Promote Organizational and Administrative Development
3.a Employ ethical and collaborative management and leadership practices appropriate to the field and role that assist institutions in accomplishing their mission
3.b Enhance the ability of institutions to provide safe and productive environments, to anticipate and prepare for change, crisis, and disruption
Program Outcome Four: Conduct Assessment, Evaluation, and Research
4.a Select and apply appropriate research methodology to assess needs and effectiveness
4.b Use assessment and research data to inform practice and administrative decisions
Admission Requirements
- A master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a nationally accredited institution that has been approved, or an appropriately certified foreign institution
- A grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) in work leading to the master’s degree and in any subsequent graduate study
- A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy .”
All applications for admission must be submitted to the Admissions Department. An admissions representative is available to help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:
- Completed Application for Admission form.
- Application fee (Non-refundable, except in California and Arizona. In the state of Arizona, the application fee is refundable if the application is canceled within three business days of the applicant signing the Enrollment Agreement.).
- Documentation of applicant employment with or access to a professional or educational organization.
- Official transcripts for the institution that conferred the master’s degree and institutions where graduate coursework was subsequently taken. Bachelor’s level transcripts are not required.
- Prior to matriculation, applicants will be required to submit a personal/professional goal statement.
Applications to Multiple Campuses
Applicants who are undecided with respect to the location they wish to attend should submit an application and full set of application materials to their location of first choice. Applicants who are accepted into their location of first choice and who, prior to beginning the program, determine they want to complete the same program at a different location, should notify the initial location of record of that intent. Provided that the same program is available, all previous approvals and credits accepted will remain in force. If an individual requests to change programs, he or she will need to meet all admission requirements of the new program.
Graduation Requirements
Students in the EdS in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program are eligible for graduation when the following requirements are met:
- Satisfactory completion of all requirements in the program of study developed in consultation with the advisor
- Satisfactory completion of 36 credit hours beyond the master’s degree that includes
- 24 credit hours of core courses
- 12 credit hours of concentration courses
- Minimum grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) and a grade of “B-“ or better in all required courses
- Successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination
- Satisfactory performance on the Summative Assessment (E 7514 Comprehensive Internship and Project )
- Completion of all degree requirements within seven years of matriculation in program
- Completed Petition to Graduate From submitted to Campus Administration
Program Requirements
Students in the EdS in Higher and Postsecondary Education degree program are required to complete 36 credit hours distributed as follows: core course requirements, 24 credit hours; concentration requirements, 12 credit hours.
