Program Overview
Argosy University offers an Associate of Science (AS) in Medical Laboratory Technology degree program. The mission of this program is to teach students to work as healthcare professionals; to interact with pathologists, technologists, other medical personnel and patients in a professional and ethical manner; to develop the best possible technical skills in laboratory analysis; and to demonstrate at all times the utmost respect and concern for the well being of the patients they serve.
The modern medical laboratory is a technologically advanced working environment that offers entry-level career opportunities for medical laboratory technicians. Technicians perform extensive laboratory testing procedures in hospitals, clinics, and other laboratory settings that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Track I
Students with an earned secondary degree or equivalent (GED) may apply to Track I of the AS in Medical Laboratory Technology degree program. The Track I program of study requires the satisfactory completion of 75 semester credit hours that includes 30 credit hours of general education, 39 credit hours of program-specific courses, and 6 credit hours of clinical training. Full-time students following the recommended Track I course sequence can complete the didactic portion of the program in as little as 24 months.
The maximum allowable time frame to complete the Track I program requirements based upon full-time status is 36 months.
Track II
Students with an earned bachelor’s degree may apply to Track II of the AS in Medical Laboratory Technology degree program. The Track II program of study requires the satisfactory completion of 51 semester credit hours that includes 3 credit hours of general education, 42 credit hours of program-specific courses, and 6 credit hours of clinical training. Full-time students following the recommended Track II curriculum outline can complete the program in as little as 16 months. The maximum allowable time frame to complete the Track II curriculum based upon full-time status is 24 months.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate entry level competency in collecting, handling, and processing samples according to laboratory policies and procedures.
- Determine the appropriate sample requirements for the requested test(s) (cognitive).
- Perform and/or describe the proper technique for specimen collection (psychomotor, cognitive).
- Perform and/or describe the appropriate technique for sample handling and processing (psychomotor, cognitive).
- Demonstrate ability to follow operating procedures to perform accurate and appropriate analytical testing.
- Utilizes procedures, techniques, and laboratory equipment appropriately, efficiently and effectively for maintenance, quality control, and patient testing according to laboratory protocol (psychomotor, cognitive).
- Select and perform appropriate methods and apply theoretical knowledge and concepts when performing laboratory tests (psychomotor, cognitive).
- Given multiple laboratory requests, prioritize and organize the workload to meet established turn-around times (psychomotor, cognitive).
- Utilize critical thinking skills to recognize and/or report normal, abnormal, and critical values and take appropriate action.
- Utilize quality assurance procedures to ensure validity and accuracy of laboratory results (cognitive).
- Evaluate results as normal, abnormal or critical and select the appropriate course of action, thus providing the physician with pertinent information related to diagnosis and treatment of the patient (cognitive).
- Investigate the cause of erroneous laboratory results and determine and apply the appropriate corrective measures (psychomotor, cognitive).
- Demonstrate a professional relationship with healthcare workers and patients.
- Project an image of confidence and professionalism through appearance, reliability, communication skills, ethical conduct and attitude (affective).
- Work independently and/or cooperatively with others, maintain composure under environmental stress, and support colleagues to provide quality patient care (affective).
- Actively support the professional organizations for clinical laboratory technology through participation and representation (psychomotor, affective).
- Provide quality service to others while demonstrating tolerance and respect for differences including protected classes, nature of illness and personal attributes (affective).
- Protect patients’ and colleagues’ right to privacy by maintaining professional confidentiality (affective).
Certification Exams
Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification exam to become a Certified Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Technician. Information pertaining to the ASCP registry certification exam can be found at www.ascp.org. Completion of the program requirements does not guarantee passage of the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification Exam. Requirements for taking and passing certification exams are subject to change without notice to Argosy University. Admission Requirements
Track I
Applicants must provide proof of high school graduation or GED and meet one of the following conditions:
- ACT Composite score of 18 or above, or
- Combined Math and Critical Reading SAT score of 870, or
- Passing score on Argosy University entrance exam, or
- Minimum High School or College GPA as follows:
- For students with 12 or fewer college credits, cumulative High School GPA of 2.0 or above
- For students with 13 or more college credits, cumulative College GPA of 2.0 or above
- A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy.”
Track II
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, a nationally accredited institution approved and documented by the faculty and dean of the College of Health Sciences, or an appropriately certified foreign institution.
- A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy .”
All applications for admission to the AS in Medical Laboratory Technology degree program must be submitted to the Admissions Department. An admissions representative will help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:
- Student Information Form
- Personal interview
- Completed Application for Admission Form
- Application fee (Non-refundable, except in Arizona. In the state of Arizona, the application fee is refundable if the application is canceled within three business days of the applicant signing the Enrollment Agreement.)
- Proof of high school graduation or GED, or proof of earned college degree
- ACT or SAT or Argosy University Entrance Exam score and pre-approved English language proficiency exam score (if applicable)
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended

Allied health professionals perform a wide range of physical tasks and assignments, and they must accept certain risks that are inherent in healthcare delivery. In applying for admission to Argosy University, prospective students are given information regarding these tasks, and applicants agree that they are capable and willing to perform these tasks and assume these risks.
Graduation Requirements
- Satisfactory completion of all requirements in the program of study
- Satisfactory completion of all courses according to program requirements
- Completion of all General Education courses with a grade of “C-” or better
- Successful completion of all clinical competencies
- A completed Petition to Graduate submitted to campus administration
- Students must also be current on all financial obligations in order to receive official final transcripts
