Program Overview


The Associate of Science in Information Technology (ASIT) degree program is designed to prepare students for entry-level technology jobs working with computers, applications, and networks. Courses within the ASIT degree program introduce students to fundamental technology concepts and allow learners to develop with real-world skills.

Through the program’s core courses, students will have the opportunity to develop foundation skills in hardware, software, networks, business, and communication. Through the program’s concentration courses, students will have the opportunity to develop specialized skills within one of the following fields: computer and network security and web development.

Program Learning Outcomes


Program Outcome One: Values
a. Understand the role of ethics within the field of Information Technology.
b. Recognize the role of IT governance within a business setting.

Program Outcome Two: Problem solving within IT and business
a. Apply creative thinking to solve basic technology problems in a business setting.
b. Employ critical thinking and rational and evaluative approaches to basic problem solving.

Program Outcome Three: Interpersonal effectiveness
a. Utilize a variety of mediums to communicate effectively.
b. Utilize the key tenets of interpersonal effectiveness: mindfulness, ethics, and competence in business interactions.

Program Outcome Four: Foundational knowledge of Information Technology
a. Identify structure and components of computer networks.
b. Explain the role of information and network security.
c. Apply information literacy to recognize and analyze how emerging and changing technology impact specific business settings.
d. Discuss concepts related to file structure, data storage, and retrieval processes.
e. Identify relationships between hardware and software applications.

 Admission Requirements


  • Applicants must provide proof of high school graduation or GED documented by one of the following:
    • Official high school transcript
    • State issued high school equivalency (home school)
    • Official General Educational Development (GED) document
    • Official Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) document
    • Official High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) document
    • Official college transcript from a regionally accredited institution or nationally accredited institution approved by the Dean of the College of Undergraduate Studies that shows proof of high school graduation or an appropriately certified foreign institution that shows proof of high school graduation
      -OR-
  • Official college transcript from a completed associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or nationally accredited institution approved by the Dean of the College of Undergraduate Studies
  • A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy 

Other Admission Requirements


All applications for admission must be submitted to the Admissions Department. An admissions representative will help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:

  • Completed Application for Admission Form
  • Application fee (Non-refundable, except in Arizona. In the state of Arizona, the application fee is refundable if the application is canceled within three business days of the applicant signing the Enrollment Agreement.)

Graduation Requirements


  • Completion of 60 credit hours as follows:
    • 30 credit hours of general education curriculum requirements1
    • 15 credit hours of  IT core course requirements
    • 9 credit hours of concentration Requirements
    • 6 credit hours of information technology elective requirements2
  • An Argosy University grade point average of 2.0 or higher
    • Satisfactory completion of general education course requirements with a grade of “D-” or better
    • Satisfactory completion of IT core course requirements with a grade of “C-” or better
    • Satisfactory completion of concentration course requirements with a grade of “C-” or better
    • Satisfactory completion of information technology elective requirements with a grade of “C-” or better
  • A minimum of 15 credit hours completed at Argosy University
  • A completed Petition to Graduate Form submitted to campus administration

1 General education curriculum requirements are 36 credit hours for Arkansas residents who are enrolled in the ASIT degree program offered through Argosy University Online Programs. 

2 Arkansas residents who are enrolled in the ASIT degree program offered through Argosy University Online Programs are not required to complete information technology elective requirements.

 

Program Requirements


Students enrolled in the ASIT degree program are required to complete twenty courses (60 credit hours) distributed as follows: general education requirements, 30 credit hours; IT core course requirements, 15 credit hours; concentration requirements, 9 credit hours; and information technology elective requirements, 6 credit hours.

General Education Curriculum Requirements (30 Credit Hours)


Students enrolled in the ASIT degree program are required to take ten general education courses (30 credit hours) distributed3 as follows:

  • 6 credit hours in academic and interpersonal skills4
  • 6 credit hours in communications
  • 6 credit hours in humanities
  • 6 credit hours in mathematics
  • 3 credit hours in social sciences
  • 3 credit hours in natural sciences

3Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities take 30 credit hours of general education courses distributed as follows: academic and interpersonal skills requirements,  3 credit hours; communications requirements,  6 credit hours;  humanities requirements, 6 credit hours; mathematics requirements,  6 credit hours, social sciences requirements, 3 credit hours;  natural sciences requirements, 3 credit hours; and general education elective requirements, 3 credit hours. Arkansas residents who are enrolled in the ASIT degree program offered through Argosy University Online Programs take 36 credit hours of general education distributed as follows: communications requirements, 6 credit hours; humanities requirements, 6 credit hours; mathematics requirements, 6 credit hours; social sciences requirements, 9 credit hours; natural sciences requirements, 9 credit hours.

4To satisfy the academic and interpersonal skills requirements, students are required to take ASP100 - Skills for Success  and COM180 - Interpersonal Effectiveness  during the first semester of attendance. Academic and interpersonal skills requirements are 3 credit hours at Argosy University, Twin Cities and are fulfilled by successful completion of COM180 Interpersonal Effectiveness. Arkansas residents who are enrolled in the ASIT degree program offered through Argosy University Online Programs are not required to take ASP100 Skills for Success and COM180 Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Core Course Requirements (15 Credit Hours)


Students enrolled in the ASIT degree program are required to successfully complete five IT core courses (15 credit hours).

Concentration Requirements (9 Credit Hours)


The primary goal of the concentrations is to help students gain the knowledge, skills, and competencies in a specific area of study. Students enrolled in the ASIT degree program are required to successfully complete one of the following concentrations:

  • Computer and Network Security
  • Web Development

 

Computer and Network Security Concentration Requirements


The Computer and Network Security concentration offers coursework for students interested in pursuing a career as an information security analyst. This concentration is designed to prepare entry-level security analysts to assess the network infrastructure and network security management aspects of information security. It focuses on network security infrastructure technologies, vulnerability assessment tools, as well as overall security infrastructure engineering and design.

The learning outcomes for the Computer and Network Security concentration are as follows:

  • Analyze use of data files and access privileges to safeguard information in computer files.
  • Modify computer security files to incorporate new software, correct errors, or change individual access status.

Web Development Concentration Requirements


The Web Development concentration offers coursework for students interested in pursuing a career as a web developer. This concentration is designed to prepare entry-level web developers to design, create, and modify web sites. It focuses on the analysis of user needs to implement web site content and graphics, test performance, and capacity, as well as integrate web sites with other computer applications.

The learning outcomes for the Web Development concentration are as follows:

  • Design web sites using an authoring languages, content creation tools, management tools, and digital media.
  • Evaluate code to ensure validity, proper structure, industry standards, and compatibility with browsers, devices, and/or operating systems.

Information Technology Electives Requirements (6 Credit Hours)*


Students enrolled in the ASIT degree program are required to take two information technology elective courses (6 credit hours) from the list below.

*Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities are required to take one IT elective course (3 credit hours) and ASP100 - Skills for Success  (3 credit hours). Arkansas residents who are enrolled in the ASIT degree program through Argosy University Online Programs are not required to take any IT elective courses.
