Program Overview


The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Liberal Arts degree program offers an integrative approach to learning which aims to develop competencies in the basic academic areas and disciplines in higher education. It is designed to extend the capacity for intellectual inquiry through the incorporation of courses that are designed to develop the individual, to prepare them for the workplace, and to participate constructively in a global society. The BA in Liberal Arts degree program is designed to give students the opportunity to integrate real world experience with the critical acquisition of a variety of human knowledge and skills that not only encourages sensitivity to the diversity of human cultures, but also creates a desire to achieve personal and professional excellence.


Program Learning Outcomes


Students who complete the BA in Liberal Arts degree program will have developed the following knowledge, skills and abilities as they pertain to personal, workplace and social development.

Program Outcome One: Communications
Develop enhanced abilities to listen, read, comprehend, speak, write and engage effectively in personal, workplace or social interaction.

Program Outcome Two: Research
Identify and access a variety of sources of information from which to become optimally informed regarding all available aspects of personal, workplace and social issues to be analyzed, evaluated, and resolved.

Program Outcome Three: Analysis
Methodically examine issues, particularly involving human behavior, by identifying pertinent individual, group and societal dynamics, their causal factors, and their interrelationships.

Program Outcome Four: Evaluation
Identify and ascertain the relative value of potential solutions to interpersonal, workplace and social problems and to prioritize such solutions.

Program Outcome Five: Critical Thinking
Integrate analytical, evaluation, inductive and deductive reasoning skills to formulate conclusions and make decisions that effectively address interpersonal and workplace issues in the context of societal perspective.

Program Outcome Six:  Sensitivity to Diversity
Analyze and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a diverse society and manage social problems and interpersonal conflict with due respect for race, ethnicity, gender, religion, culture, economic status, and lifestyle.

Program Outcome Seven: Interpersonal Effectiveness
Apply interpersonal effectiveness theories and skills to everyday interaction, explore how interpersonal effectiveness can help them achieve personal and professional goals, and prepare for further development of interpersonal effectiveness skills during their academic program.


Admission Requirements


  • Applicants must provide proof of high school graduation or GED documented by one of the following:
    • Official or unofficial high school transcript (except in Georgia and Tennessee)
    • High School Diploma (except in Georgia and Tennessee)
    • State issued high school equivalency (home school)
    • Official General Educational Development (GED) document
    • Official Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) document
    • Official High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) document
    • Official college transcript from a regionally accredited institution or nationally accredited institution approved by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences that shows proof of high school graduation or an appropriately certified foreign institution that shows proof of high school graduation

  • Official college transcript from a completed associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or nationally accredited institution approved by the College of Arts and Sciences
  • A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, English Language Proficiency Policy .

Other Admissions Requirements

All applications for admission must be submitted to the Admissions Department. An admissions representative will help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:

  • Complete Application for Admission Form
  • Application fee (Non-refundable, except in Arizona. In the state of Arizona, the application fee is refundable if the application is canceled within three business days of the applicant signing the Enrollment Agreement.)

Graduation Requirements


  • Completion of a minimum of 120 credit hours as follows
    • 42 credit hours general education curriculum requirements1
    • 39 credit hours liberal arts core requirements
    • 18 credit hours additional liberal arts requirements
    • 21 credit hours open elective requirements2
  • Completion of a minimum of 42 credit hours of upper division courses3
  • An Argosy University grade point average of 2.0 or higher
    • Satisfactory completion of general education curriculum requirements with a grade of “D-” or better
    • Satisfactory completion of liberal arts core course requirements with a grade of “C-” or better
    • Satisfactory completion of additional liberal arts course requirements with a grade of “C-” or better
    • Satisfactory completion of open electives requirements with a grade of “D-” or better
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours completed at Argosy University
  • A completed Petition to Graduate submitted to campus administration
Notes

1 The General Education Requirements at Argosy University, Sarasota and Argosy University, Tampa are 45 credit hours. To satisfy these requirements, students choose an additional general education elective. Elective Requirements are 6 courses or 18 credit hours. The total credit hours required to complete the program remains the same at 120 credit hours.

2 The Open Electives Requirements are 18 credit hours at Argosy University, Sarasota and Argosy University, Tampa.

3 All students must take a minimum of four courses at the 300 and 400 level within General Education, and a minimum of ten 300 and 400 level courses within the program electives.
 


Program Requirements


Students enrolled in the BA in Liberal Arts degree program are required to successfully complete 120 credit hours distributed as follows: general education curriculum requirements, 42 credit hours; liberal arts core course requirements, 39 credit hours; additional liberal arts requirements, 18 credit hours; and open electives requirements, 21 credit hours. 
 

General Education Curriculum Requirements (42 Credit Hours)


Students enrolled in the BA in Liberal Arts degree program are required to successfully complete fourteen general education courses (42 credit hours)4 distributed as follows:

  • 6 credit hours in academic and interpersonal skills5
  • 6 credit hours in communications
  • 6 credit hours in humanities, including HUM200 - Critical Thinking and Problem Solving 6
  • 6 credit hours in social sciences, including PSY101 - General Psychology 7
  • 6 credit hours in natural science
  • 6 credit hours in mathematics
  • 6 credit hours in elective courses (in any general education distribution area)8

4 The General Education Requirements at Argosy University, Sarasota and Argosy, University, Tampa are 45 credit hours.

5 To satisfy the Academic and Interpersonal Skills requirements, students are required to take ASP100 - Skills for Success  and COM180 - Interpersonal Effectiveness  during the first semester of attendance. The requirement to take ASP100 Skills for Success will be waived for students who are admitted with a CGPA of 2.0 and who have either 1) completed an associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or 2) successfully completed at least 60 semester credit hours of college level coursework. Transfer credit is not accepted for either course. Exceptions to this policy may occur in the case of established course equivalencies with institutions that have a transfer or articulation agreement with Argosy University. Academic and Interpersonal Skills requirements are 3 credit hours at Argosy University, Twin Cities and are fulfilled by successful completion of COM180 Interpersonal Effectiveness. Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities who are required to take ASP100 Skills for Success apply this course towards the Open Electives requirements. Arkansas residents who are enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs offered through Argosy University Online Programs are not required to take ASP100 Skills for Success and COM180 Interpersonal Effectiveness.

6 Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities are required to take 9 credit hours within the Humanities category.

7 Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities are required to take 9 credit hours within the Social Sciences category.

8 Students at Argosy University, Sarasota and Argosy University, Tampa are required to take 9 credit hours of general education elective courses. Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities are required to take 3 credit hours general education elective courses. Students who receive a waiver for ASP100 Skills for Success take an additional 3 credit hours of general education elective courses as follows. Students at all campuses except Argosy University, Sarasota, Argosy University, Tampa, and Argosy University, Twin Cities take 9 credit hours of general education elective courses. Students at Argosy University, Sarasota and Argosy University, Tampa take 12 credit hours of general education elective courses. Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities apply ASP100 Skills for Success towards the open elective requirements of their selected degree program, and therefore their general education elective requirements are not impacted by the course waiver.

Liberal Arts Core Requirements (39 credit hours)


Students enrolled in the BA in Liberal Arts degree program are required to complete thirteen core courses (39 credit hours). All students are required to take four prescribed core courses (12 credit hours). To complete the liberal arts core requirements, students also choose three courses or 9 credit hours from each interdisciplinary category (The Individual, The Workplace, and Society) as listed below (27 credit hours).

 † These courses can only be applied to core requirements in the BA in Liberal Arts degree program and cannot be taken to fulfill general education distribution requirements.

Additional Liberal Arts Requirements (18 credit hours)


Students enrolled in the BA in Liberal Arts degree program are required successfully complete  six courses (18 credit hours) selected from the three interdisciplinary categories that have not been taken to satisfy the liberal arts core requirements.

Open Electives Requirements (21 Credit Hours)


Students enrolled in the BA in Liberal Arts degree program are required to successfully complete seven courses (21 credit hours) selected from any area with the approval of the program chair.

Open Electives Requirements are 6 courses or 18 credit hours for students at Argosy University, Sarasota and Argosy University, Tampa

Students at Argosy University, Twin Cities apply ASP100 - Skills for Success  towards the Open Electives Requirements. Students who receive a waiver for ASP100 Skills for Success select a different course to apply towards the Open Electives requirements.
