E6007 - Foundations of Reading3 credit hour(s) This course is designed to provide foundational knowledge of the science of reading for School Counselors and others in the schoolhouse who support classroom teachers. In this course, candidates will not only read about the components of the scientific approach to the teaching of reading but study and report on how those components look in actual K-12 classrooms. Each class member will identify a school and specific classrooms where the concepts of the course will be examined as they are practiced. Candidates will discuss and practice scientifically-supported components of effective reading practice and how those components operate within a world of books, assessment and feedback practices, instructional strategies, instructional materials, computer-based programs, and reading and writing in the content areas.
Pre-requisites: The candidate must make arrangements and gain approval to engage in recurring, weekly visits to classrooms where the teaching of reading will be observed and practiced.
