Doctor of Education in Counseling Psychology Degree Program—Argosy University, *Seattle

Program Overview

The Doctor of Education (EdD) in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Seattle is designed to emphasize the development of attitudes, knowledge and skills essential in the formation of professionals who are committed to the ethical provision of quality services. To ensure that students are prepared adequately, the curriculum is designed to provide for the meaningful integration of theory, training and practice.

Eligibility for Licensure

Washington

Graduates of the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Seattle are eligible to become licensed psychologists in Washington. Students should determine the requirements for professional licensure in the state they wish to practice. Graduation Requirements

Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Seattle must meet the following requirements to be eligible for graduation:

A year of full-time residency at the University, or a minimum of 750 hours of student-faculty contact involving face-to-face individual or group educational meetings.
Satisfactory completion of all requirements in the program of study developed in consultation with faculty members. Any course in which the student earns less than a “B-” must be retaken.
Successful completion of 72 credit hours that includes:
- 48 credit hours of core courses
- 12 credit hours of research courses
- 12 credit hours of dissertation courses
Successful completion of the Counseling Competency Examination (CCE).
Successful completion of comprehensive examination.
Successful defense of dissertation.
Completion of these requirements within seven years of matriculation into the program.

Counseling Competency Examination

The Counseling Competency Examination (CCE) includes a treatment summary, case presentation, written case analysis, oral presentation, and oral examination based on the written and case presentations. This format is designed to provide an assessment of students’ knowledge, clinical reasoning within a conceptual model, technical skills, relationship skills, and ability to communicate in written and oral form. Students are expected to take the examination in the last semester of their second year of coursework. Students must submit a CCE Request form to the Student Services Coordinator. In the event of failure, the examination may be retaken once. If, during the second attempt, the examination is not successfully passed, the results of the examination will be presented to the Student Professional Development Committee to determine further action.

Eligibility

The CCE evaluation criteria are designed to assess clinical competency at a level appropriate to students who have completed required course work. Students are eligible to take the exam if they are in good academic standing in the doctoral degree program (a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale).

Program Requirements

Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Seattle are required to successfully complete a minimum of 72 semester credit hours distributed as follows: core course requirements, 48 credit hours; research requirements, 12 credit hours; and dissertation requirements, 12 credit hours. In addition to completing the course requirements listed above, students are required to successfully complete the Counseling Competency Examination (CCE), Comprehensive Examination, and defend their dissertation.

**Unless otherwise advised, students who begin dissertation Session I will follow Track One. Students who begin dissertation Session II will follow Track Two.

Practicum Requirements

All students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Seattle are required to complete a 600 hour doctoral level practicum. All practicum placements must be approved by the department chair or the Director of Training prior to starting. Practicum begins in the Fall, however application for practicum is accomplished Spring Semester Session I. Students must work closely with the department chair or Director of Training to accomplish the practicum site applications.

Internship Requirements

Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Seattle are required to complete an Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) or APPIC equivalent internship. Students are eligible to begin internship when they have successfully completed all their academic course work and passed the Counseling Psychology Comprehensive Examination. Students are required to have defended their dissertation proposal prior to beginning internship. Students work with the department chair or Director of Training to complete the application process and make application to appropriate internship sites. The internship application process typically begins during the fall term one year prior to the start of internship. Most internships begin in August or September and consist of a 40 hour work week commitment for a minimum of 12 months. Students are required to complete 2000 hours during internship. While internship sites exist in Washington, many sites are not in the Seattle area. There are sites throughout the United States which the student can apply. Students are not eligible for graduation without completing the internship and dissertation.

Recommended Course Sequence for the Doctor of Education in Counseling Psychology Degree Program at Argosy University, Seattle

Student progress through the program is intended to be sequential. Certain courses are offered to first-year students that are designed to provide a theoretical and practical foundation for courses that will follow in subsequent years. Certain advanced courses also require the student to have the background of more basic courses in order to benefit fully from the course experience. Students must satisfy all stated prerequisites for a course before registration for that course can be considered official.
