Program Overview

---

The Doctor of Education (EdD) in Counseling Psychology degree program (non-licensure) is designed to meet the special requirements of working mental health professionals who wish to enhance their skills as practitioners and leaders in mental health settings. The EdD in Counseling Psychology (non-licensure) degree program does not lead to licensure/credential as a provider of counseling services and should not be viewed as preparation for entry-level practice.

Program Outcome One: Advanced Practice (includes theory, assessment, intervention)

Formulate accurate assessment of the psychological functioning of individuals, couples, families, and groups and apply appropriate therapeutic intervention strategies based on appropriate theoretical orientations, sound scientific theory, and evidence-based practice.

Program Outcome Two: Leadership and Supervision

Apply best practices, using standards and competencies in the field, to prepare leaders for supervision, administration, or teaching.

Program Outcome Three: Research

Analyze, design, conduct, and defend research in their disciplinary context using appropriate research designs. Analyze and evaluate professional literature to make evidence-based decisions related to current practices in the field.

Program Four: Ethics

Engage in ethical and socially responsible practice and apply ethical decision-making strategies grounded in established ethical standards of practice.

Program Outcome Five: Interpersonal Effectiveness (Includes multicultural competence and communication)

Develop and improve positive relationship skills via effective communication, respect for others, appreciation of diversity and cultural sensitivity, and awareness of their impact on others.

Admission Requirements

---

• A master’s degree in a mental health field with a counseling practicum from a regionally accredited institution, a nationally accredited institution approved and documented by the faculty and dean of the College of Counseling, Psychology and Social Sciences, or an appropriately certified foreign institution.
• A grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0) in work leading to a master’s degree and in any subsequent graduate study.
• A minimum score on an Argosy University pre-approved English language proficiency test is required for all applicants whose native language is not English or who have not graduated from an institution at which English is the language of instruction as specified in Section Five, Admission Policies, “English Language Proficiency Policy .”
• Completion of an interview with a member of the program Admissions Committee.

All applications for admission must be submitted to the Admissions Department. An admissions representative is available to help interested applicants complete the following required documentation:

• Completed Application for Admission Form
• Personal/professional goal statement with a self-appraisal of qualifications for the profession
• Current résumé (or career summary)
• Three completed Applicant Recommendation Forms
• Official transcripts from the institution that conferred the master’s degree and any institutions where graduate coursework was subsequently taken. Bachelor’s level transcripts are not required.

Admission Notification

---

Students are notified in writing of the decision made by the Admissions Committee. The Admissions Committee decisions are final and not subject to appeal. Applicants who have been denied admission may reapply after the passage of one year from the date of denial by submitting all documents required of a new applicant. Individuals who intend to reapply for admission are strongly encouraged to contact the Admissions Department prior to reapplying.

Application Requirements

Applicants are expected to provide all required materials to the Admissions Department by the application deadline. All applications will be reviewed and interviews scheduled with applicants who meet the requirements to determine the level of fit between a prospective student and the Argosy University. The Director of Admissions will notify all applicants of admission decisions.

Applications to Multiple Campuses

---

Applicants who are undecided with respect to the location they wish to attend should submit an application and full set of application materials to their location of first choice. Applicants who are accepted into their location of first choice and who, prior to beginning the program, determine they want to complete the same program at a different location, should notify the initial location of record of that intent. Provided that the same program is available, all previous approvals and credit hours accepted will remain in force. If an individual requests to change programs, he or she will need to meet all admission requirements of the new program.

Graduation Requirements

---

Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program are eligible for graduation when the following conditions are met:

• Satisfactory completion of all requirements in the program of study developed in consultation with the faculty members. Any course in which the student earns less than a “B-” must be retaken.
• Satisfactory completion of 60 credit hours beyond the master’s degree that includes:
  • 27 credit hours of core course requirements
  • 9 credit hours of elective course or Counselor Education & Supervision concentration requirements
  • 12 credit hours of research course requirements
  • 12 credit hours of dissertation requirements
• Successful completion of the Doctoral Qualifying Examination.
• Successful completion and defense of the dissertation.
• Completion of these requirements within seven years.
• A completed Petition to Graduate submitted to campus administration.

Academic Progress Requirements

---

 Students must make satisfactory progress towards a degree by maintaining a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0. Students must complete this program within seven years after matriculation. Students who have temporarily withdrawn from Argosy University will have seven years plus the length of time that they were not enrolled, not to exceed one year, to complete the program.

Students are required to complete 60 semester credit hours. The minimum amount of work that a student must complete each year following matriculation to successfully complete the program appears below:

Program Foundation Requirements

In addition to the 60 credit hours program requirements, there are eight (8) foundation courses and a year-long practicum seminar requirement for the program. Students with equivalent master’s level coursework and clinical practicum experiences may waive the foundation courses requirement. Students must complete the foundation courses within the first year (except practicum) and the practicum series within the second year.

Program Requirements

Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program are required to successfully complete 60 credit hours distributed as follows: core course requirements, 27 credit hours; elective or Counselor Education & Supervision concentration requirements, 9 credit hours, research requirements, 12 credit hours; and dissertation requirements, 12 credit hours. In addition to completing the course requirements listed above, students are required to successfully complete the comprehensive exam and defend their dissertation.
