Program Overview


The Doctor of Education (EdD) in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Inland Empire*; Argosy University, Los Angeles; Argosy University, Orange County; Argosy University, San Diego*; and Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area* is designed to emphasize the development of attitudes, knowledge and skills essential in the formation of professionals who are committed to the ethical provision of quality services. To help ensure that students are prepared adequately, the curriculum is designed to provide for the meaningful integration of theory, training and practice.

Eligibility for Licensure


California

Graduates of the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program may be eligible to pursue licensure in California as psychologists once the internship requirement of licensure is met. In addition to the educational requirements provided at Argosy University, Inland Empire; Argosy University, Los Angeles; Argosy University, Orange County; Argosy University, San Diego; and Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area, 3,000 hours of supervised training under a licensed psychologist is required for licensure as a psychologist which must be acquired outside of the Argosy University system. A maximum of 1500 hours may be acquired during the doctoral program with the remaining hours completed outside of the program. Also, prospective psychologists must pass the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), and the California Jurisprudence and Professional Ethics Examination (CIPEE). Students interested in licensure are responsible for obtaining the date information directly from the Board of Psychology to ensure they can meet all California state requirements.

Graduation Requirements


All students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Inland Empire; Argosy University, Los Angeles; Argosy University, Orange County; Argosy University, San Diego; and Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area must meet the following requirements to be eligible for graduation:

  • Satisfactory completion of all requirements in the program of study developed in consultation with the faculty members. Any course in which the student earns less than a “B-” must be retaken.
  • Successful completion of 60 credit hours that includes:
    • 36 credit hours of core courses
    • 12 credit hours of research courses
    • 12 credit hours of dissertation courses
  • Successful completion of the comprehensive examination (CPCE)
  • Successful defense of dissertation  

Program Requirements


All students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Inland Empire; Argosy University, Los Angeles; Argosy University, Orange County; Argosy University, San Diego; Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area are required to successfully complete 60 credit hours distributed as follows: core course requirements, 36 credit hours; research requirements, 12 credit hours; and dissertation requirements, 12 credit hours. In addition to successfully completing the course requirements listed above, students are required to successfully complete the comprehensive examination requirements and defend their dissertation .

Core Course Requirements


Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program are required to complete twelve core courses (36 credit hours).

Research Requirements


Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program are required to complete a four course research sequence (12 credit hours).

Dissertation Requirements


Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program are required to complete a 12-credit hour dissertation course sequence as outlined below.

Counseling Psychology Comprehensive Examination Requirements


Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program are required to complete the Counseling Psychology Comprehensive Examination (CPCE). The CPCE is a national exam that is offered each session for a total of six times a year. The format is designed to provide a thorough and standardized assessment of students’ knowledge of professional practice, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, theory, writing, research, interpersonal effectiveness, ethics, and diversity. Students must have completed all of their coursework prior to registering for the CPCE with a GPA of at least 3.0. If students are in the midst of completing their final courses, they may, with permission from the department chair take the CPCE during their last term of classes. Students must register with the CPCE coordinator and have a degree audit in order to have access to the e-College shell and to participate in the comprehensive examination.

The CPCE is presented online via the e-College shell. Students have one week to complete the exam. It is an open book exam, although students must do their own work. There is both a clinical vignette and a research vignette to which students must respond. Students submit their completed Comprehensive Competency Examination (CCE) to the drop box on the e-College platform.

Students may take the exam the exam twice, with an allowance for a provisional pass to make revisions on their first try. Grades are: Pass, Provisional Pass, and Fail. Students who fail the exam the first time will be given detailed feedback with suggestions for remediation. Students who fail the exam a second time will be dismissed from the program.

Students enrolled in the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program  at Argosy University, Inland Empire; Argosy University, Los Angeles; Argosy University, Orange County; Argosy University, San Diego; and Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area may complete an internship (0 credit hours).

Recommended Course Sequence for the EdD in Counseling Psychology degree program at Argosy University, Inland Empire; Argosy University, Los Angeles; Argosy University, Orange County; Argosy University, San Diego; and Argosy University, San Francis


Student progress through the program is intended to be sequential. Certain courses are offered to first-year students that are designed to provide a theoretical and practical foundation for courses that will follow in subsequent years. Students must satisfy all stated prerequisites for a course before registration for that course can be considered official.
